This Purple and White Jewelry is made from the Quahaug (quahog) Clam. Wampum has played a significant role in American Indian culture for thousands of years. White shell beads (wompi) and the purple quahaug beads (saki) are traditionally used as adornment, to display rites of passage, and woven into belts to record oral traditions and validate treaties. Since the early history of American colonies, Wampum served as money at various times and places.
There are many talented local wampum artists on Martha's Vineyard.
